Mine shaft and strata treatment

In a working mine, water in a shaft and weak strata in a roadway stop production. We seal water-bearing layers around shafts and declines with grout rings, and consolidate fractured roof and face strata with injection resins, working within the mine’s own rules and shifts.

When to call us

The signs

  • Shafts and declines taking water from a water-bearing layer.
  • Sudden inflow during sinking or development.
  • Weak, fractured roof and face strata in roadways and at faces.
  • Declines that keep needing support repairs.
Sealing water in a mine shaft and consolidating roadway strataSection of a vertical shaft through layered strata. Water from a water-bearing layer enters through the lining on the left; on the right, holes drilled from inside the shaft form a grout ring that cuts it off. A roadway at depth has its weak roof consolidated with resin and bolts. WATER-BEARING STRATACOAL 123456

How we do it

Method, step by step

  1. Assess

Inflow, strata and the mine’s working constraints.

  2. Seal the water

Holes drilled from the shaft or decline into the water-bearing layer, and a grout ring injected around it.

  3. Consolidate the strata

Low-viscosity resin injected into fractured roof and face strata, with bolts where needed.

  4. Work to the mine’s rules

Shift pattern, ventilation and the mine’s safety management plan.

  5. Measure

Inflow and roof behaviour recorded before and after.

Questions

What clients ask

Can resin be injected underground in a working mine?

Yes, with the right products and controls. We plan the work with the mine’s management: the products, the ventilation, the shift pattern and the safety rules.

What about gushing water during development?

Rapid-set PU foam reacts with the water and sets fast enough to stop a gush that would wash out a slower grout. It is followed by a resin that seals and consolidates the ground behind it.
