Ground
Permeation and chemical grouting
Permeation grouting fills the pores and fissures of the ground without displacing or fracturing it. Chosen for the grain size and the water, a low-viscosity resin or gel turns loose, wet ground into a stronger, tighter mass, often from a few holes and without digging anything out.
When to call us
The signs
- Loose or silty sand that runs, settles or carries water.
- Ground under foundations, slabs and heritage structures that must not be disturbed.
- Fissured rock that needs consolidating or sealing.
- Ground ahead of excavations and around shafts.
How we do it
Method, step by step
Test the ground
Grain size, permeability and the chemistry of the groundwater.
Choose the grout
Acrylate gel for the finest soils; PU and microfine cement for sands and fissures; silicate resin to consolidate fissured rock.
Trial
A site trial confirms gel time and take before production grouting starts.
Inject
Through sleeve pipes, perforated self-drilling anchors or packers, at controlled pressure.
Verify
Cores, permeability tests, MASW or load tests against the agreed acceptance value.

Quality
Checks and proof
- Gel time checked with site water, at site temperature, each shift.
- Take and pressure logged per hole and stage.
- Strength or permeability measured after treatment.
On record
Where we have done it
Badi Patan Devi heritage site, Patna Sahib
Soil under a heritage site consolidated by chemical grouting and self-drilling anchors, with the strength gain measured by IIT Patna.
Delhi Metro CC-04, Azadpur
Two tunnel boring machines held 30 m down in loose, saturated sand. We sealed and consolidated the ground so they could be retrieved.
T-46 P2, Sangaldan, USBRL
Ballastless track that settled further every monsoon, lifted back to its design profile on a live line, with the ground beneath made stable.
Questions
What clients ask
How is permeation grouting different from compaction or jet grouting?
Permeation grouting fills the existing pores and fissures without moving the ground. Compaction grouting displaces the ground and jet grouting erodes and mixes it. Permeation works where the ground is open enough to take the grout and must not be disturbed.
How much stronger does the ground get?
It depends on the soil and the dose, so we measure it. In tests by IIT Patna on soil from the Badi Patan Devi site, PU grout at 5% of the dry soil weight raised the unconfined compressive strength from 148 kPa to 3,284 kPa. That result belongs to that soil and is not a figure for any other ground.
Are the chemicals safe for groundwater?
Ask for the technical and safety data sheets of the grout proposed, and check them against the rules for the site’s groundwater. Where the water is used for drinking, the grout and the tests are agreed with the owner before work starts.
